The novel is set at the beginning of the First World War in a provincial Galician town. In the Jewish tavern, are very different characters, escaping the advancing Russian troops: Chassidim with their tzaddik and his family, a shoemaker and baker, photographer and bookbinder, Polish priest and a Hungarian Hussar. They quarrel and make up, regurgitate rumors and argue about politics. No one yet knows what the future is fraught with war, but the tragedy has already begun: the girl dies, in raging fire and Cossack pogrom.
